In uncertain times, Academic Summer remains a trusted beacon for international families. We spoke with CEO, Helen Lami to address current concerns raised by travel agents in various countries. It seems parents are worried about current global tensions, visas, safety matters and other issues. In this interview article Helen aims to reassure them so that wherever possible we can still deliver transformative experiences for our students this year.

“We will find a way through uncertain times together. Education changes lives and is worth investing in, whatever is happening in the world.“ – Helen Lami, CEO of Academic Summer, with students at last year’s camp in Canada.
The Clever Fox Journal: Helen, the current global climate seems rather unsettled at the moment. What message would you like to send to parents and agents?
Helen Lami: We recognise that the world is a strange place right now. Political tensions, economic challenges and unsettling news reports are making families cautious. We understand this and our doors are always open to discuss any concerns our agents, parents or students may have.
Having said that, I also believe that education and cultural experiences are more important than ever in times of uncertainty as they demonstrate confidence for the future. This is what children need, in my opinion, to embrace the world they are born into and make it a better place.
Therefore, we should not let fear rob our young people of the amazing opportunities we have had. They have already lost so much through Covid Lockdowns despite us playing catch up these past few years. This is ongoing and I am delighted that Academic Summer, continues to play an active role in providing our students with the best possible summer camp experience, offering a safe, nurturing environment where students can learn, grow and connect internationally, laying foundations for peace and understanding in the future
The Clever Fox Journal: So what would you say to parents feeling overwhelmed by challenging political news or fears of war?
Helen Lami: Over the past 30 years I’ve run many summer camps and had to deal with all kinds of challenges from bird flu concerns to the London terror attacks to Covid and we have managed to pull through. Even where there is war, parents have chosen to give their children hope through education. I have seen it first hand with families from the former Yugoslavia.
I remember when Belgrade and Pristina was bombed in 1999, many parents just wanted to give their kids time out so they sent them on UK Holiday Camps. Sadly we still face such hostilities in the world today and we currently have learners coming from war torn countries and these children benefit enormously.
Today parents in Ukraine and Russia want to give their children a break from the conflict where they can experience normal life and relationships. This is why we accept everyone no matter the country. The way to peace, is being able to understand different cultures and build respect for each other. As Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Giving your child the opportunity to grow, learn and make international friends is one of the best gifts you can offer. And we are here to provide that safe, inspiring environment.
The Clever Fox Journal: How does Academic Summer handle concerns about safety?
Helen Lami: Safety has always been our top priority. All our locations, whether in London, Bristol or Canada are calm, secure and supported by robust safeguarding practices. We work closely with local authorities, embassies and accredited partners to stay ahead of any risks. Students are welcomed with open arms and our multicultural ethos ensures that every child, regardless of nationality, feels respected, accepted and at home. We are pleased to have over 60 nationalities attend our camps and proud of our international team who treat each child as an individual, ensuring they feel welcome and included in our full academic programme.

The Clever Fox Journal: Some families are understandably cautious about spending money given the uncertainty about trade tarriffs. What would you say to them?
Helen Lami: I completely understand that families are being more careful right now, and we are always available to discuss options. Having said that, parents don’t need to be reminded that investing in their child’s future is one of the most important decisions they can make. At Academic Summer, we offer real value: all-inclusive programmes filled with education, activities and care. We also invite agents and families to speak with us if they have special requests or ideas. We are open to working together creatively.
The Clever Fox Journal: What about families worried about travelling to the UK during uncertain times?
Helen Lami: The UK remains a very safe, stable destination with a long history of welcoming international students. British education is world-renowned for its quality and integrity. Unlike cheaper options elsewhere, our programmes offer true educational value, accredited teaching and a strong emphasis on student wellbeing. Our campuses are secure, our staff are permanent and our students come from many different countries.
To quote the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves at the World Economic Summit, “The world has changed and we see that all around us, what the UK is able to offer is political, financial and economic stability in a world that is very volatile at the moment. I think that is a huge plus for the UK and we are open as a country for business, trade and investment and we have taken on board the feedback from businesses both domestic and international about the things that hold back or delay investment.”

We do hope your child will be with us in 2025!
The Clever Fox Journal: What about the new ETA? And I don’t mean estimated time of arrival!?
Helen Lami: Yes many students now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK. This started in 2023 with a few countries and as of April 2025 extends to most EU countries. However the ETA is a simple travel document can be secured online quickly. The application takes only a few minutes, costs £16, and decisions are usually made within 3 working days. Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years and can be used for multiple visits. If your child is coming to one of our summer camps in London or Bristol, check to see if an ETA is needed.
The Clever Fox Journal: What should Russian students do if they are facing problems applying for a UK visa in Moscow?
Helen Lami: Due to current difficulties with VFS Global services in Moscow, some students are experiencing challenges in securing visa appointments for the UK. To avoid delays or cancellations, students can apply for their UK visa through alternative consulates in nearby countries, such as Armenia or Azerbaijan. Agents and families are encouraged to consider these options promptly. Academic Camp is also raising this issue formally with UK authorities and continues to support families throughout the visa process.
The Clever Fox Journal: Some students may be exploring other destinations like Ireland, Switzerland, or even Japan and Korea. Why choose the UK and Academic Summer?
Helen Lami: There is simply no substitute for the quality and tradition of British education. If families are looking to improve English, Britain is the best place to do it. And our programmes are not just about language – they are about preparing students for life, for leadership, for international understanding. Plus, with our small, family-run approach, parents and agents deal directly with people they know and trust, not a faceless corporation.
The Clever Fox Journal: Given these concerns of parents and agents are you optimistic about summer 2025?
Helen Lami: Absolutely. Despite challenges, our camps at Sidcot School are looking particularly strong this year. Perhaps that is because it is held in the tranquillity of the English countryside (see photo below left). This is an ideal location for families wanting to avoid sending their children to London or preferring an outdoor, sporty experience.
However for those who like the idea of being close to some of the world’s most iconic sights our career pathways at David Game College are also proving very popular. In fact we may have limited availability of some of the pathways. Right now the Entrepreneurship Career Pathway seems to be attracting the most bookings. We are very pleased to partner with David Game, pictured below right, and his outstanding college, in Central London which offers state-of-the-art laboratories, modern facilities and an inspiring learning environment for our students.
Thanks to our proven academic programme over many years, we are used to welcoming many returning families and agents who trust us and I truly believe that once again, we will have a fantastic summer this year.

The Clever Fox Journal: Finally, what is your personal motto during these challenging times?
Helen Lami: In the UK we have a saying, “Keep calm and carry on”. It’s who we are as a nation, no matter what we press through. When it comes to summer camps I would say, “Keep calm, carry on and give your child confidence for the future.” There is always a solution to a problem and we will find a way through things, together. Education changes lives – and that is something worth investing in, whatever is happening in the world.
If you are an agent or parent who has any concerns, please reach out to the Academic Summer team including by What’sApp. They will be happy to address any concerns in more detail.
