World Tourism Day: celebrating education and sustainable transformation

World Tourism Day is celebrated globally every year on 27 September. It is a day set aside by the United Nations to reflect on how tourism can be a force for good — building cultural bridges, supporting communities and driving sustainable transformation.

The theme for 2025, Tourism and Sustainable Transformation, reminds us that travel should do more than take people from place to place. It should open minds, broaden perspectives and change lives.

Why World Tourism Day matters

World Tourism Day highlights how travel can:

  • Promote cultural exchange and understanding;
  • Support inclusive economic growth and empower communities;
  • Encourage more sustainable ways of exploring the world; and
  • Create opportunities for education and transformation.

At Academic Summer and Living Learning English (LLE), these goals are at the heart of what we do. For us, tourism and education are inseparable. Each year, we welcome students from many nations who come to learn English in the UK and leave with so much more than language skills. See our magazine which gives more details of 58 different nationalities who regularly attend our camps, with more countries being added all the time.

Our combined staff is also made up of many nations. On a recent Zoom call with our team we counted staff members from Hong Kong, Spain, Lithuania, Chile, South Africa, Canada, Ukraine, Hungary and Scotland, speaking various languages including Albanian, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Hungarian and English. See Academic Summer and LLE: Two teams, one vision for international education.

This international diversity mirrors the students we welcome each year. Families who want to learn English in the UK benefit from staff who understand different cultures first-hand, helping every learner feel at home while they immerse themselves in British life.

How Academic Summer and LLE support sustainable transformation

  • Sustainability mindset – We encourage students to travel responsibly, valuing cultural exchange and minimising their environmental footprint.
  • Immersive educational travel – Our summer camps and home tuition courses allow students to live, learn and grow in the UK, creating deep and lasting impact beyond a tourist visit.
  • Supporting local communities – With LLE, students live in teachers’ homes, benefiting households and communities directly.
  • Flexible pathways – Families can combine summer camps with home tuition, giving parents and children tailored opportunities to study together.
  • Cultural enrichment – Excursions, trips and integrated learning help students explore British heritage and everyday life.

“When teams who live and breathe global education come together, they make far more than a programme — they build bridges. Our commitment is that students coming to learn English in the UK not only become more confident in language, but more curious, more connected and more conscious.” — Helen Lami, CEO of Academic Summer and Principal of LLE

World Tourism Day is a reminder that education and travel are powerful partners. At Academic Summer and LLE, we are proud to help people from across the globe gain skills, confidence and cultural awareness that will last a lifetime.
