World Tourism Day is celebrated globally every year on 27 September. It is a day set aside by the United Nations to reflect on how tourism can be a force for good — building cultural bridges, supporting communities and driving sustainable transformation.
The theme for 2025, Tourism and Sustainable Transformation, reminds us that travel should do more than take people from place to place. It should open minds, broaden perspectives and change lives.
Why World Tourism Day matters
World Tourism Day highlights how travel can:
- Promote cultural exchange and understanding;
- Support inclusive economic growth and empower communities;
- Encourage more sustainable ways of exploring the world; and
- Create opportunities for education and transformation.
At Academic Summer and Living Learning English (LLE), these goals are at the heart of what we do. For us, tourism and education are inseparable. Each year, we welcome students from many nations who come to learn English in the UK and leave with so much more than language skills. Our combined staff is also made up of many nations. On a recent Zoom call with our team we counted staff members from Hong Kong, Spain, Lithuania, Chile, South Africa, Canada, Ukraine, Hungary and Scotland, speaking various languages including Albanian, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Hungarian and English.
